The 2025 super shoe showdown! These two are clearly among the benchmark carbon-plated racing shoes.
But their approaches differ a lot: one is versatile, the other highly specialized.
Cushioning and Comfort
The Adios Pro 4 relies on two layers of Lightstrike Pro foam sandwiching Energy Rods 2.0 carbon rods. Cushioning is generous, with 39 mm at the heel and 33 mm at the forefoot, for excellent shock absorption. The foam is plusher than on the previous version, and the rocker sits further forward.
The Vaporfly 4 takes a more moderate approach with its ZoomX foam and Flyplate. Lower (35 mm heel, 29 mm forefoot), it feels firmer and closer to the ground. Nike deliberately made the foam denser for a more balanced, less plush feel.
Both shoes share the same 6 mm drop, lower than their previous versions.
Responsiveness and Energy Return
This is where the two philosophies split completely. The Adios Pro 4 goes for impressive responsiveness with strong forward propulsion. Its aggressive rocker, which starts two-thirds of the way along the shoe, makes for an excellent roll.
The Vaporfly 4 does it differently: its rocker is less pronounced, so the stride feels flatter. On the other hand, the steeper angle of its carbon plate creates a powerful lever effect that you really notice on hard accelerations.
Weight and Lockdown
Nike hits hard with a featherweight 164 g / 5.8 oz (US 8.5, EU 42) versus 193 g / 6.8 oz for the Adidas. Both are ultralight, but that 30 g gap is significant.
On lockdown, both shoes excel. The Adios Pro 4’s Adizero LIGHTLOCK upper stretches vertically while holding the foot perfectly side to side.
The Vaporfly 4 goes with an extremely thin, breathable mesh and a fit closer to the foot. Both breathe very well, but the Adidas seems better suited to wide feet.
Recommended Use
Here’s the fundamental difference: the Adios Pro 4 is built to be versatile, fast from the 5K up to the marathon. Its generous cushioning and natural roll make it a shoe that works for a wide range of racers.
The Vaporfly 4 is clearly aimed at speed over short and middle distances (5K to 10K, maybe the half marathon). More demanding, it asks for a powerful stride to get the most out of it. Nike now recommends the Alphafly 3 for the marathon.
Adidas Adios Pro 4 or Nike Vaporfly 4: Which Should You Choose?
If you want a versatile super shoe for every distance up to the marathon, the Adios Pro 4 is the obvious choice. More forgiving and more comfortable over the long haul, it suits a wider range of runners.
Go for the Vaporfly 4 if you’re a powerful runner out to smash your 5K and 10K records. It asks more of you technically, but delivers a unique sense of speed for experienced runners.
In short: the Adios Pro 4 is the carbon shoe for everyone, and the Vaporfly 4 the pure-speed specialist for short distances.
