Asics Trabuco Max 5 vs Hoka Speedgoat 7 (2026 Comparison)

Asics Trabuco Max 5 vs Hoka Speedgoat 7

The Asics Trabuco Max 5 and the Hoka Speedgoat 7 are two trail heavyweights, but they don’t target exactly the same runner. The Trabuco Max 5 is a max-cushioning specialist for runnable ultras. The Speedgoat 7, Hoka’s flagship, plays the versatility and technical-terrain card.

First gap, the weight: 264 g / 9.3 oz for the Speedgoat 7 versus 294 g / 10.4 oz for the Trabuco Max 5, heavier by some thirty grams. Heights are close and maximal on both sides, around 40 / 35 mm, with the same 5 mm drop (Asics actually lowered the Max 5’s stack slightly compared to the Max 4 to gain stability).

Underfoot, the Speedgoat 7 finally gets a supercritical EVA foam, more modern, which delivers very good shock absorption and enough responsiveness for the trails. The Trabuco Max 5 relies on FlyteFoam Blast+, with a feel that leans firm and excellent shock absorption, designed to soak up long distances. Its responsiveness stays a step below: that is not what it is built for.

Grip and technical terrain are where the Speedgoat pulls ahead: Vibram MegaGrip rubber and 5 mm lugs deliver impeccable grip on the most technical ground. The Trabuco Max 5 answers with ASICSGRIP rubber and 4 mm lugs, for very reliable traction, but it feels more at home on runnable paths than in pure technical terrain. Neither packs a real rock plate: protection comes from the thick stack of foam and a reinforced forefoot.

Both uppers are comfortable, breathable and protective; the Max 5 actually debuts a new upper that fixes the irritation complaints aimed at the Max 4. The Trabuco Max 5 prioritizes protection and long-haul comfort and suits heavier runners well, while the Speedgoat 7 favors versatility, able to alternate recovery runs, long runs and technical trail workouts.

Hoka Speedgoat 7 comparison

Trabuco Max 5 or Speedgoat 7: which should you choose?

Our pick is the Hoka Speedgoat 7, rated 9.6/10. Lighter, more versatile and equipped with the best grip thanks to Vibram MegaGrip, it is the choice we recommend to most trail runners, especially on technical terrain.

The Asics Trabuco Max 5 remains an excellent option for one specific use: runnable ultras and heavier runners, who want maximum cushioning and serious protection on less technical paths. Its limited responsiveness and higher weight reserve it for that role.

More versatile, lighter and better rated, the Speedgoat 7 offers the better value. The Trabuco Max 5 is for runners who love long, runnable distances in search of maximum comfort.
