Asics Gel Nimbus 28 Review (2026): Finally Lightweight?
The Nimbus is one of the most legendary series at ASICS. To last and remain relevant, it had to adapt to market changes. Thus, it took a maximalist turn since the 2025 version, which received its share of criticism while being crowned the “most comfortable” shoe by an independent study.
It must be acknowledged that today all shoes have taken this direction. This twenty-eighth edition remains in this trend with some changes compared to the previous version.
Does it suit your runner profile and your goals? Is it worth the upgrade compared to the Gel Nimbus 27? This is what we will see in this comprehensive test.
Why Trust Me?
With a personal record of 2h38 in the marathon and a substantial weekly training volume, I have the opportunity to test numerous shoe models to support my practice.
I ran with the Asics Gel Nimbus 28 in numerous sessions to evaluate their comfort on different types of runs (e.g., long runs, tempo runs). I also consulted feedback from other experts to validate my assessment and ensure that my recommendations will be applicable to the widest audience.
Our Verdict
Excellent ultra-comfy shoes for all daily training sessions.
- 266 g (Size 42 men’s)
- FF Blast Plus Foam, PureGel
- Height: 43.5 mm (heel), 35.5 mm (forefoot)
- Drop: 8 mm
- Training and long-distance competition
The Nimbus 28 continues the same comfort tradition as previous versions; the sensation remains impressively spot on from the moment you put it on.
The lighter engineered mesh upper still offers a precise fit and unmatched comfort. The midsole utilizes FF BLAST+ foam, replacing FF BLAST+ ECO foam, while still being combined with PUREGEL. The maximalist dimensions ensure optimal shock absorption.
The feeling is still very well balanced between soft and firm. The dynamism is better thanks to the weight loss and the better responsiveness of the foam. But it is still not the strong point of this model.
Finally, we find the HYBRID ASICSGRIP outsole resulting in a different distribution that continues to provide impeccable traction on all urban surfaces.
In summary, the Asics Gel Nimbus 28 closely resembles the previous version with some points of improvement. It continues to establish itself as one of the most comfortable and robust running shoes.
Pros
- Almost 30 g/1.1 oz less, offering better versatility
- Excellent comfort for all scenarios
- Effective grip
- Impressive shock absorption for long distances
- Very well-fitted and breathable upper
Cons
- Still not so responsive
- High stack height might not appeal to everyone
Cushioning
The midsole of the Asics Gel Nimbus 28 is slightly modified compared to the previous version. We find the PUREGEL technology, which has the same properties as the classic Gel but is 65% softer. The capsule is present at the rear and will primarily benefit heel strikers.
But the FF BLAST+ ECO foam is replaced by FF BLAST+ foam. Some may regret this less eco-friendly approach, but the brand makes up for it in other areas at this level. I also find this latest version to be more efficient.
It is incomparable with new-generation foams like FF BLAST+ Turbo or the latest FF LEAP (in A-TPU), but it offers better guarantees than the ECO version.
As with previous versions, the sensation upon impact is, in my opinion, very well balanced between softness and firmness. Various opinions can be found on this point, some finding it plush, others too firm.
I allow myself to “decide” because I have worn previous versions (as well as a very large number of shoes): the feel should suit a wide variety of runners with good running enjoyment.
The dimensions do not change with 43.5 mm under the heel and 35.5 mm under the metatarsus. Shock absorption is up to these imposing dimensions, and the shoe allows for easily extending the distance.
There are no limits in terms of runner profile (e.g., experience, weight). Thus, the Nimbus 28 is an obvious choice for preparing and running a marathon.
Note that in theory, they are not authorized in official competitions as they exceed 40 mm, but this restriction mainly applies to elites.
Finally, the 8 mm drop is completely standard and requires no adaptation.
Energy Return
With a weight of 266 g in size 42, there is a noticeable weight loss compared to the Nimbus 27. Without being very light, it positions itself among the “less heavy” in the category.
This is felt in driving and energy economy. The new foam and the more pronounced rocker (new slightly more aggressive geometry) also help provide better responsiveness.
Note that dynamism is still not the shoe’s strong point (nothing comparable to carbon-plated shoes). But transitions are smooth, and dynamism is good enough to cover a wide variety of paces, which should suit many runners.
Support and Stability
With a stack height of 43.5 mm, one should not expect the sensations of a shoe close to the ground and the inherent stability that comes with it. Despite this, the wide base, well-fitted upper, and reliable traction ensure good overall stability.
This model is for neutral gait (universal) and the brand indicates it may also be suitable for supinators.
Foot Lockdown
Successive editions follow each other and the discourse remains the same for all brands: this new version is more efficient, more comfortable, etc. ASICS does not break this rule and claims that this new Nimbus 28 outperforms the previous one.
Except that in the case of Nimbus, it still becomes difficult to truly improve the shoe, simply because the comfort bar is already very, very high. It is therefore not a criticism in my opinion to say that the comfort is up to the level of version 27.
One might have feared a decrease with the weight loss, but ASICS succeeded in the gamble of not sacrificing anything. The sensation when putting it on is quite incredible with a softness and fit comfort that will be very difficult to surpass for future versions.
The upper is in technical mesh, always multi-directional to provide more support in strategic areas. We also find the eyelet construction with more space between the different fibers.
The breathability is very good with optimal ventilation while offering enough protection in colder weather. These shoes should therefore suit all weather conditions.
The gusseted tongue is perhaps the point that impressed me the most. I remember already with the 26, I found it exceptional as it supported the foot well during movement. It is even more refined and still stretchable. Result: no annoying pressure points.
The collar is also slightly thinner and the heel counter holds the foot well. Thus, we have very good locking.
Finally, also note the loop at the back that facilitates putting them on, the OrthoLite X-55 insole that ensures good moisture management, and the reflective elements for safety.
Size and Fit
The fit is also quite incredible with impressive elasticity and flexibility. There are no pressure points, and this further enhances the slipper-like sensation. The fit is very good thanks to the wrap-around mesh and more reinforced areas than the previous version.
I haven’t found any criticism on the sizing, proof that the shoe fits true to size and should suit a wide variety of feet. You can therefore take your usual size.
Traction
The HYBRID ASICSGRIP technology, a fusion of AHAR+ and ASICSGRIP technologies, was inaugurated in version 26 (then identically replaced on 27). For this Gel Nimbus 28, Asics changes the rubber layout with a reduced coverage (in a weight-reduction effort).
I do not notice any loss of traction. It remains very good with excellent grip. The adherence is very good even on wet surfaces, with no nasty surprises to expect in rainy weather.
While it is not a trail model, the Gel Nimbus 28 will be capable of handling a wide variety of paths, as long as they are not rugged or technical.
Use
No great surprise for this Asics Gel Nimbus 28, it will be quicker to mention the shoe’s limitations than its strengths.
I note one main one in my view: dynamism.
This translates into two points:
- There are more performant models for competition, such as the Metaspeed models (notably the METASPEED EDGE that I presented at length)
- The shoe will be limited on pure speed sessions, such as 400 m repeats
But we must qualify: the Nimbus 28 offers sufficient responsiveness for the vast majority of runners for speed sessions.
In competition, it will also be an excellent option for all runners who prioritize comfort over performance.
For the rest, all moderate-paced sessions are a real pleasure because the shoe is so comfortable on the foot. With the XXL dimensions and the significant cushioning that comes with it, one can extend the distance without any limits.
No restriction either on the user’s profile. If you are a novice or beginner, the shoe is a high-end model that can safely accompany you on your first strides.
More experienced runners will integrate the shoe into their rotation for all types of sessions like easy runs. For my part, I also willingly use the shoe on my long marathon-pace runs.
The Nimbus 28 confirms its status as a Swiss army knife for training and is clearly one of the best options for those who value comfort and protection above all else.
Quality and Durability
The Asics Gel Nimbus 28 is designed to last. The brand knows well what the runners’ expectations are on this point and it cannot miss. Durable outsole, solid mesh, foam with a good lifespan: the shoe has the assets to accompany the runner for the usual 800-1000 km (depending on the strides and weight).
Comfort and quality come at a price, it is true that this model is rather expensive. We leave it to you to judge the quality-price ratio.
Note that the upper is made up of 75% recycled materials and this model is vegan (no animal material). The carbon footprint is 9.3 kg CO2e per pair (36% lower than average according to Asics).
Asics Gel Nimbus 27 vs 28
Notable innovations include:
- New technical mesh upper with more robust reinforcements
- Weight reduction (around 30 g)
- FF BLAST+ foam replacing FF BLAST+ ECO foam
- (Slightly) more aggressive rocker geometry
- New tongue and collar construction
- Rubber distributed differently on the outsole
The 28 version is lighter, a bit firmer, and also slightly more reactive. But in all transparency, the two shoes are very close to each other and you can buy the 27 if you find it on sale.
Conclusion
The Asics Gel Nimbus 28 is one of the most comfortable shoes in the world. It is always a pleasure to wear in any circumstance, the upper is simply an Asics masterclass.
Without being particularly dynamic, the shoe ensures sufficient responsiveness to vary training scenarios.
The high shock absorption will allow for extending the distance for all profiles, ideal if you wish to prepare and run a marathon in comfort mode.
