Asics Gel Nimbus 27 (2025): Even More Comfortable?
Is it necessary to present the legendary Gel Nimbus series?
Even if it’s not the oldest, it’s clearly the brand’s most iconic model, and very few runners have never heard of it.
The different editions perfectly illustrate the evolution of running over time. Since version 25, the brand has taken a maximalist turn for its bestseller.
Will this 27th edition follow the same trend? Is it a good choice for your practice?
That’s what we’re going to find out in this complete review.
Why trust me?
With a personal marathon record of 2 hours 38 minutes and a high weekly training volume, I am lucky enough to be able to test many models of running shoes to help me in my sport.
I tested the Asics Gel Nimbus 27 on different types of sessions to assess their comfort and The Ride. In addition, I also consulted other runners of different levels to validate my feelings and ensure that my recommendations will be useful to as many runners as possible.
Our Verdict
Excellent shoe that takes comfort and protection to the next level and is very versatile.
- Weight: 305 g/10.8 oz (EU size 42/US size 9)
- Foam: FF Blast Plus Eco, PureGel
- Height: 43.5 mm (heel), 35.5 mm (forefoot)
- Heel-to-toe drop: 8 mm
- Long-distance training and competition
The Asics Gel Nimbus 27 continues toward maximal cushioning adopted since the Nimbus 25. While there were many changes between the 25 and the 26, this new version has a few, which is understandable given the success of the previous version.
The midsole uses the FF BLAST+ ECO foam in a new composition with even more stack. The sensations are similar, with a well-balanced feel between soft and firm. The responsiveness is satisfying, and the shock absorption is optimal.
The upper in engineered jacquard mesh offers slightly better fit and comfort than the previous version.
Finally, the high-performance ASICSGRIP HYBRID technology offers effective traction on all surfaces, further enhancing running comfort with a softer impact.
In short, the Asics Gel Nimbus 27 remains one of the most comfortable daily trainers and continues to prove itself as the ideal marathon pick for many runners.
PROS
- Supreme comfort
- High-performance outsole
- Even better shock absorption with impressive dimensions
- Well-fitting, breathable upper
- Good responsiveness for more versatility
CONS
- Rather heavy
- High price
Cushioning
As with the previous version, the midsole of the Asics Nimbus 27 is made up of FLYTEFOAM BLAST PLUS ECO foam and PUREGEL technology.
The latter has the same properties as classic Gel, but is 65% softer. The capsule is present at the back and will mainly benefit heel strikers.
The foam composition is new according to the brand. Despite this, the feel is very similar, between firm and soft, which is clearly a good thing as the 26 version was so pleasant to run in.
Some testers find the shoe a little stiff, however, but this is not the case for me.
The dimensions are even higher, with a 43.5 mm heel stack height and a 35.5 mm metatarsal stack height (1.5 mm more than last year).
In other words, the shock absorption is optimal and will suit all runners regardless of weight or level. The shoe is clearly tailored for the marathon and you will have no problem extending the distance.
The dimensions clearly confirm what we think: the 40 mm regulation only concerns the elites. Indeed, it would be inconceivable for Asics to take risks with its flagship model. Personally, I have never heard of checks being carried out at the end of official runs (if you have heard of any, please let us know).
Finally, the heel-to-toe drop of 8 mm is completely standard and will not require any adaptation.
Energy return
At 305 g/10.8 oz in size EU42/US9, the weight is stable compared to the 26.
The shoe can’t be described as lightweight, and this is the only point (along with the price) raised by the testers, who felt it during speed sessions.
Despite this, I find the shoe responsive and capable of handling a wide variety of paces. I therefore confirm that it has satisfactory bounce.
The heel-to-toe transitions are fluid thanks to the rocker being more pronounced than on the previous version.
Support and stability
With 43.5 mm of stack, one can legitimately be concerned about stability.
If you prefer a good ground feel, these are not the shoes for you.
Despite this, the platform is wide and the outsole is high-performance with good support. With the addition of a very good fit, safe handling and good stability are guaranteed.
This model is for neutral (universal) stride and the brand indicates that it can also be adapted for supination.
Foot Lockdown
The upper is made of technical jacquard mesh, again with a multidirectional knit to provide more support in strategic areas.
There is a small difference with the v26: the upper goes up to slightly surround the foot for better support.
There is also the eyelet construction with more space between the different fibers. This clearly contributes to the flexibility of the fit, which allows it to adapt to any type of foot.
In terms of sizing, the shoe fits true to size and its flexibility allows it to adapt to different shapes and wider feet.
The design of the upper also offers very good breathability for summer with enough coverage to be comfortable in winter as well.
The brand claims that this model is more comfortable and offers a better fit than the previous version.
When I read this before receiving them, I was skeptical to say the least, as the previous version was so close to perfection. So I did the classic test: the Nimbus 26 on one foot and the Nimbus 27 on the other to compare them.
It’s not a big deal, but yes, the 27 is even more comfortable: the feeling when putting it on is quite incredible, and I don’t see how the brand can do better for the 28.
It feels like a slipper, making you want to keep it on your foot for as long as possible.
The stretch gusset and knit collar reinforce this sensation. No slipping has been reported, and the lacing system is effective.
The heel counter also works very well and completes the excellent foot support.
Finally, the OrthoLite X-55 insole ensures good moisture management and the reflective elements guarantee safety.
Traction
HYBRID ASICSGRIP technology, a fusion of AHAR+ and ASICSGRIP technologies, was introduced on the previous version. The brand has chosen to use this remarkable technology again for the Nimbus 27.
Asics is reserving it for the moment for its top-of-the-range models such as the Nimbus and the Kayano, certainly because of the higher cost.
In any case, the traction is excellent with a very powerful grip. The grip is very good even on wet surfaces.
In addition, the firmness of the rubber comes in perfect harmony to counterbalance the softness of the foam. There are still grooves to ensure good flexibility, which gives the sole a classic suppleness.
Without being a trail running model, the Gel Nimbus 27 will be able to tackle a wide variety of easy terrain in addition to the road.
Use
The editions come and go, but there is one constant that can be found in each one: you can do almost anything with a Nimbus!
This v27 is no exception to the rule and is certainly (like the v26) one of the most versatile in the series.
There are no weight restrictions: it’s especially suitable for heavier runners, but nothing prevents lighter runners from having fun with it.
There are no restrictions in terms of level or experience either.
Novices will have a top-of-the-range shoe with extreme comfort and a safe ride to get them started.
More experienced runners will need a very good shoe to confidently increase their distance and accumulate kilometers, from recovery jogging for basic endurance to more paces for long tempo runs.
The shock absorption is excellent and particularly suitable for long distances.
As is often the case, the only limitation to note is for pure speed sessions where the weight is felt.
In competition, there are higher-performance and lighter models, but the Nimbus 27 is clearly one of the best options for those who prioritize comfort and protection.
Quality and Durability
As with all the models in the series, the Asics Gel Nimbus 27 is designed for covering miles and miles. The mesh is very durable and the outsole is very sturdy.
All these elements contribute to its good durability, but the price tag is on the higher-end – so you be the judge of its value for money.
The upper is made from 100% recycled materials, and 20% of the foam’s materials come from renewable sources.
According to the brand, the ecological footprint of the shoe is 27% lower than the average for the running shoe sector.
Finally, the Asics Gel Nimbus 27 are vegan and therefore do not use any animal materials.
Asics Gel Nimbus 27 vs 26
New features include:
- New Jacquard mesh upper
- Even more comfort
- New composition for FF BLAST+ ECO foam
- Improved midfoot adjustment
- An additional 2 mm thickness
To be completely transparent, the two shoes are very similar, so you can opt for the 26 if you find it during promotion periods.
Conclusion
ASICS boasts that its Gel Nimbus 27 is the most comfortable shoe on the market, and we don’t see many models who can rise to the challenge on this front.
Its comfort and comprehensive features make it highly versatile for daily training and accessible to all runners, whatever your level or favorite distance.
It’s also a good marathon pick for those who value comfort over performance.
