Asics Gel Trabuco 14 Review: Read This Before Buying (2026)

Asics Gel Trabuco 14 test

In spring 2026, ASICS launches the 14th version of its iconic Gel Trabuco range, with a consistently greater focus on long-distance comfort.

We have greatly appreciated the evolution of the Trabuco in recent years. At first glance, this Asics Trabuco 14 is very similar to the previous model, but there are still a few changes.

Is the gamble successful once again? Is it a good choice for you?

That’s what you’ll discover with my detailed field test based on several sessions in the Montserrat mountain near Barcelona.

Our Verdict

9.3Overall Score

A Great Classic: A Versatile, Protective, Comfortable, and Efficient Model on All Trails.

  • 9.7 oz/276 g (men’s size 42), 9 oz/254 g (women’s size 40)
  • 4-mm lugs
  • 35 mm heel stack height, 8-mm drop
  • All levels, long distances, slow to moderate paces

The Asics Gel Trabuco 14 confirms the robustness of the range with a consistently very good grip on most technical terrains, even wet ones. The geometry evolves slightly at the back to gain in fluidity without sacrificing traction.

The FF BLAST MAX foam provides a softer and slightly more responsive cushioning than the previous version. With 35/27 mm and an 8 mm drop, the shoe remains accessible and protective over long distances.

The wider and more breathable upper improves comfort on ultra without sacrificing good support.

In short, the Trabuco 14 are trail shoes that are versatile, comfortable, and effective for long runs and ultras.

Adherence and Terrain Types

Asics Gel Trabuco 14 Rubber Outsole

The Gel Trabuco family has always been distinguished by its quality grip, and the Trabuco 14 continues this tradition.

The outsole still relies on the ASICSGRIP compound, known for its very good grip on wet, muddy, or rocky surfaces.

The 4 mm lugs offer an effective balance between traction, versatility, and running comfort. They notably make road sections more tolerable than with 5 mm.

Asics Gel Trabuco 14 heel

Compared to the Trabuco 13, the geometry evolves slightly: the rear part exposes more foam, allowing a small weight gain and a smoother transition, without any real loss in grip effectiveness.

I used the Trabuco 14 both on dry and wet rocky mountain terrain, and the grip proved reassuring in all situations, including on slippery rocks.

Asics Gel Trabuco 14 on feet

It’s worth noting that Montserrat, where I tested these shoes, is famous for its easily slippery conglomeratic rock when it gets a bit wet. Yet the ASICSGRIP rubber offered good traction. Vibram better watch out!

We validate the grip for technical trails.

Cushioning

Asics introduces an important change on this version with the integration of FF BLAST MAX foam, replacing FF BLAST PLUS ECO.

This foam offers a slightly softer touch compared to the previous version while adding some responsiveness. The result is very similar to the 13, but I find there’s a slight gain in comfort. The feel underfoot remains balanced, without firmness.

The height remains quite high with 35 mm at the heel and 27 mm at the forefoot. The drop is 8 mm, a configuration accessible to the majority of trail runners, even those not accustomed to trail running.

The rear GEL capsules help to absorb shocks and contribute to making the run comfortable even on rugged trails by effectively absorbing shocks.

We also have a rock plate that effectively protects the foot without overly stiffening the shoe.

This Asics Trabuco 14 is clearly aimed at long distances and has all the assets to accompany trail runners on them.

Energy Return

With 9.7 oz/276 g in size EU 42, the Trabuco 14 is average for a shoe offering so much protection.

It is not a model oriented toward pure performance, but the slight rocker combined with the new foam makes the stride smooth and pleasant.

On rolling terrain, the shoe favors stability and comfort over responsiveness. Runners looking for more dynamism might turn to lighter models.

In short, the Trabuco 14 is ideally suited for long and regular outings.

Foot Lockdown and Protection

Asics Gel Trabuco 14 technical mesh upper

The technical mesh upper has been completely redesigned. It’s lightweight and breathable, double-layer, and more durable. Notably, it offers a wider and higher forefoot shape, providing more space for the toes.

The design ensures a good compromise between protection and breathability.

This choice significantly improves comfort on ultras when the foot tends to swell. On the downside, the precision slightly decreases on very technical transitions.

Laces and tongue of Asics Gel Trabuco 14 shoe

To compensate, Asics has refined the support at the midfoot to limit internal movements.

The heel is well-supported thanks to a rigid counter and a comfortably padded collar. The thin tongue, combined with an elastic band for the laces, stays perfectly in place.

The sizing is true to fit, with a generally more accommodating volume, including for slightly wide feet.

Asics Gel Trabuco 14 toe box

I always run in size 44 with Asics and it was perfect for this model.

Usage: Who is the Asics Trabuco 14 for?

Asics Gel Trabuco 14 trail shoes test

The Gel Trabuco 14 is primarily aimed at:

  • long runs
  • ultra formats
  • trail runners seeking comfort, stability, and versatility

I wore them for 2 to 4-hour outings in the mountains, on varied terrains. Comfort and stability remained constant, even as fatigue set in.

It shows its limits on very fast sessions or extremely technical terrains, but that is clearly not its category.

Quality and Durability

pair of Asics Gel Trabuco 14 trail shoes

Asics maintains an excellent level of finish on this Trabuco 14. The ASICSGRIP rubber is robust and durable, and the new mesh seems to withstand abrasion well.

Environmentally, the shoe’s carbon footprint is 11.1 kg CO2e per pair, 1.8 kg more than the Nimbus 28, which suggests this model uses less recycled materials.

These shoes are vegan (no animal material) and manufactured in Vietnam.

Should You Buy the Asics Trabuco 14?

Asics Gel Trabuco 14 unboxing

The Asics Gel Trabuco 14 confirms the progressive evolution of the range towards an ever more comfortable, accessible trail shoe that is sufficiently technical for most of your outings.

Without upsetting the formula, Asics refines the key elements: softer cushioning, more generous fit, better-balanced support. The result is a shoe perfectly suited for ultras, capable of ticking off the miles with ease.

Beginners as well as experienced trail runners will find one of the most versatile and effective trail options available today.
