On Cloudmonster 2 Review (2024): All-Around Comfort?

On Cloudmonster 2 review

After a first version that caused a stir in 2022 and marked a turning point for the brand, the new On Cloudmonster 2 arrives with high expectations, especially after the success of the Cloudeclipse.

Does this second version of the Cloudmonster live up to its predecessor? Does it suit your runner profile and goals? We’ll find out in this in-depth review.

Why trust me?

With a personal best marathon time of 2 h 38 and a substantial weekly mileage, I can test many running shoe models to help my practice.

I tested the On Cloumonster 2 in different sessions to evaluate their comfort and performance. What’s more, I also consulted other runners at different levels to check notes and ensure that my recommendations were useful to as many runners as possible.

Our Verdict

9.4Overall Score

A maximalist shoe with high-stack cushioning and great versatility.

  • Weight: 295 g/10.4 oz
  • Cushioning: Helion, balanced feel
  • Stack height: 35 mm (heel), 29 mm (forefoot)
  • Drop: 6 mm
  • Daily training, all distances

The On Cloudmonster 2 is a modern model in line with the revival initiated by the Swiss brand. As usual, the midsole is ingeniously designed with Helion foam and CloudTec Phase geometry and also features the brand’s biggest Clouds.

As with the previous version, the underfoot feel is a balance between firmness and softness. With the new nylon Speedboard plate, shock absorption is excellent with surprising responsiveness.

The recycled mesh upper is supple and comfortable. However, breathability and fit are not the strongest points of the shoes, leaving many runners disappointed. The outsole is reinforced with rubber in strategic places for good traction.

All in all, the On Cloudmonster 2 is highly effective and versatile, and it stands out as one of the best trainers for longer distances.

Foot lockdown and protection

  • Very comfortable shoe
  • Very good shock absorption
  • Good versatility
  • Greater stability
  • Smooth ride
  • Good durability

  • Fitting problems depending on foot size
  • Quite heavy

On Cloudmonster 2 cushioning foam

The midsole of the On Cloudmonster 2 features Helion dual-density foam, firmer in the heel and softer under the forefoot. The Cloudtec geometry has been specially designed so that the Clouds compress horizontally and vertically in sequence.

The Cloud elements are the most massive ever designed by On, giving this shoe excellent shock absorption. The feel is somewhere between firm and soft. It’s far from the rigidity of the brand’s previous models, but it’s firm enough for a good ride.

On Cloudmonster 2 heel

The stack height of 35 mm at the heel and 29 mm under the toes is substantial, and there are no real restrictions in terms of distance or the runner’s weight.

The heel-to-toe drop of 6 mm is classic for the brand but may take some getting used to at first if you’re used to higher configurations.

Energy return

Th higher stack compared to v1 means about 0.71 oz/20 g more with the shoe reaching a total of 10.4 oz/295 g. It’s a bit heavy and you can feel it, especially if you’re used to lighter shoes.

However, the combination of CloudTec geometry and nylon plate gives strong propulsion, which is far better than many competing models. The rocker is moderate but allows quick, smooth rear-to-front transitions.

This neutral shoe doesn’t offer stability features, but with the plate and rubber outsole, the Cloudmonster 2 is naturally stable and should offer a safe ride for daily workouts for most runners.

Foot Lockdown

The upper is the point that divided the testers the most. Everyone agreed that the Cloudmonster 2’s engineered mesh upper is soft and comfortable, with plenty of padding.

On Cloudmonster 2 engineered mesh upper

With an inner lining and shallow perforation points, the shoe doesn’t offer optimal breathability. This is not a problem in cold weather, but you may feel warm in warm temperatures.

Even more concerning, runners didn’t universally approve of the fit. Those with narrow feet especially felt that the shoes offered too much space. Therefore, it’s best to try them if possible—some runners recommend going half a size down.

However, allow me to chime in: I found that the shoe fitted very well and offered a precise lockdown. For the anecdote, I met another runner who had the shoes in size 44 EU/13.5 US (I’m a size 41 EU/8 US) and I was able to run with his pair (albeit by tightening the laces all the way). So I think it’s more a question of volume preference than lockdown hazard, which I think is very good. However, as mentioned, don’t take my word for it, go try them!

On Cloudmonster 2 gusseted tongue

The conception of the heel counter works very well, and the gusseted tongue is slim and effective. Lastly, the flat laces are sturdy and practical, and there are reflective elements for night-time runners.

Small rubber pads have been added to some of the Clouds to prevent abrasion. The overall quality also seems better compared to the original version.

Traction is good, with an excellent grip for a powerful forward roll.

On Cloudmonster 2 rubber outsole

Even on wet surfaces, the grip is excellent. The outsole is not rigid and offers good flexibility.

Last but not least, the outsole of the Cloudmonster 2 has been reworked to prevent stones from accumulating. If you have run with other brand models like the On Cloud, you know this is a real issue whenever you step on dirt paths. The result is very convincing, allowing you to venture on non-technical trails comfortably.

It’s hard to please everyone. While the brand’s max cushioning direction ensures excellent shock absorption for any distance, some regret a loss of responsiveness compared to v1.

On Cloudmonster 2 road running shoes

For my part, I found the responsiveness very good and was able to push the shoe through most paces without any problems. On tempo runs, I had a lot of fun on marathon paces of 3 min 40 s/km However, I have to admit that this model is more limited for interval training.

There are higher-performance models for racing, but this is an excellent alternative for runners who don’t like the rigidity of a carbon plate.

The On Cloudmonster 2 is a reliable trainer for long runs that will appeal to runners looking for comfort and stability. Also, it will suit all profiles, from novice to experienced runners.

On Cloudmonster 1 vs 2

There are several significant changes:

  • 6 mm more stack for better shock absorption
  • New nylon plate
  • Revamped mesh for better lockdown
  • Heavier

These new features change the experience with v1; the Cloudmonster 2 is more cushioned and has better stability, but there’s a slight loss of responsiveness. Despite this, the two versions are very similar, and we recommend you buy one or the other depending on the deals you come across.

runner wearing On Cloudmonster 2 for road running

The On Cloudmonster 2 is a complete and versatile daily trainer. Its ingenious design offers an innovative experience while the good shock absorption and responsiveness make it possible to tackle just about any workout scenario.

Higher-performance models are on offer in the context of racing, but the CM2 can be a good pick for runners looking for an alternative to carbon-plated racers.

Overall, we think it’s one of the best daily trainers available right now.
