The Nike Winflo 12 and the Nike Pegasus 42 are two neutral training shoes from Nike, but they don’t belong to the same tier. The Winflo 12 is an entry-level model, designed for starting out without breaking the bank. The Pegasus 42 is the brand’s premium, versatile model, pricier but more polished. So this is above all a budget question.
Both share a 10 mm drop and weigh nearly the same: 289 g / 10.2 oz for the Winflo 12, 284 g / 10.0 oz for the Pegasus 42. The Winflo even packs a bit more foam, with a stack around 41 / 30 mm versus 37 / 27 mm for the Pegasus. But the real difference is not there: it is in the quality of the materials.
Underfoot, the Pegasus 42 pairs ReactX foam with a full-length Air Zoom unit, for responsive, well-balanced cushioning. The Winflo 12 sits on Cushlon, Nike’s entry-level foam, and a single Air unit in the heel. The result is more basic: the cushioning is plush and absorbs shocks decently, but it lacks energy return and the ride is clunkier. In use, the Winflo is clearly less comfortable and less responsive than the Pegasus.
That is consistent with their positioning. The Pegasus 42 keeps doing what the series does best: real versatility, from easy runs to faster workouts. The Winflo 12 is more limited: it does the job on easy outings, but it is not built to accelerate.
Both mesh uppers are breathable and comfortable. The Pegasus 42 offers good lockdown with a bit more room up front than the 41; the Winflo 12 runs a bit snug, with a slightly narrow forefoot.
Winflo 12 or Pegasus 42: which should you choose?
In the end it all comes down to budget. The Pegasus 42 (9.1/10) is the better shoe of the two, no debate: more comfortable, more responsive and far more versatile thanks to its ReactX foam and full-length Air unit. If you have the budget, it is the one to get.
The Nike Winflo 12 is the budget option. It targets the runner who is starting out and wants a good shoe without paying Pegasus money. It does that job very well, as long as you accept entry-level cushioning, less comfortable and less responsive.
Our advice is simple: if the budget allows it, get the Pegasus 42, you won’t regret it. If you are starting out and price comes first, the Winflo 12 is an excellent first choice for about $35 less.
