Brooks made its trail name with the Cascadia series, iconic for the brand. The Caldera series, more recent and (originally) more cushioned, has plenty of fans of its own. Historically, the two held clearly separate positions: the Cascadia snappier and more agile for technical trails, the Caldera more of a long-distance cruiser.
The Cascadia 20 blurs the lines: the two now share exactly the same stack height and a nearly identical weight. So what really separates these two models?
The Cascadia 20 moves to the nitrogen-infused DNA Flash v2 foam (versus DNA Loft v3 on the 19), with 4 mm of extra stack and a Vibram MegaGrip outsole. The Trail Adapt system is kept and reworked, rock plate included.
The Caldera 8 stays on DNA Loft v3: nicely balanced, substantial cushioning for long distances. It has no rock plate, but you barely notice thanks to its thick stack.
On grip, the 4 mm lugs are equally deep on both sides. The difference is in the rubber: the Cascadia 20 switches to Vibram MegaGrip, the absolute benchmark in trail running, found on most of the best models including the Hoka Speedgoat 7 and the Saucony Peregrine 16.
The result is impeccable on every surface. The Cascadia is ready for the most technical trails.
The Caldera, for its part, sticks with Brooks’ in-house technology: TrailTack Green. The result is convincing, but perhaps a notch below Vibram.
The Caldera 8’s upper concentrates this version’s changes: better breathability and a closer-to-foot fit. The setup gets more precise and catches up to the Cascadia, which has always offered precise lockdown for sketchy descents.
Cascadia 20 or Caldera 8: Which Should You Choose?
For technical trails and versatility, the Cascadia 20 is the better choice. It is a dialed-in model for every scenario in terms of terrain and distance. It handles ultras very well, and you often see it on the start line of grueling, technical ultra-trails like UTMB.
Think of the Caldera as the comfort alternative, better suited to runnable trails but technical enough for the harder sections.
