And let’s just say it right off the bat: the brand has really outdone itself with this Deviate Pure Nitro, a running shoe that offers high performance with excellent value for money.
A few years ago, no one would have believed it was possible to find such a high-performance model in this price range. Puma has pulled off a major coup: this model is set to compete with very popular models like the Adidas Adizero Evo SL and the Asics Novablast 6.

With a personal best of 2:38 in the marathon and a high weekly training volume, I test many different models of running shoes to help improve my performance.
I conducted my field test of the Puma Deviate Pure Nitro during various types of workouts to evaluate their comfort and how they feel while running. Quality is guaranteed. The midsole features NITROFOAM foam, which is nitrogen-infused and made of 100% Peba. The absence of a plate provides a less rigid ride while maintaining excellent responsiveness.
Shock absorption helps you cover more distance, making for an enjoyable ride. The engineered mesh upper impresses with its quality: its comfort and breathability rival those of more expensive models.
The PUMAGRIP outsole rubber is also highly effective and provides excellent traction. In short, the Puma Deviate Pure Nitro stands out as one of the best shoes for daily training, even in its first iteration.

Cushioning: Plush 100% Peba Foam for the Win
The midsole of the Puma Deviate Pure Nitro is made entirely of NITROFOAM, 100% Peba. You can really feel it upon impact.
The process is now well known: supercritical nitrogen is injected to expand the foam and make it very light. However, applying this technology to Peba foam is still a relatively recent development.
The main difference from the Puma Deviate Nitro 4 is the absence of a carbon plate, which makes for a smoother ride. The feel is more plush, and it’s an enjoyable ride.
It’s a bit much for some riders, who are used to firmer rides and found it a little too soft. Here’s my take on the matter.
I test a lot of shoes, so I have plenty to compare them to. The Pure Nitro offers a balanced feel, admittedly, it’s on the plush side.
That said, it’s not over the top: this shoe will suit many runners. The enjoyable ride is great, it feels really comfortable, and it is suitable for runners of all levels.
The 38 mm thickness under the heel and 30 mm under the forefoot provide excellent shock absorption. There’s no distance limit: you can easily run longer distances, even a marathon, if you’d like.
Some reviews suggest that this shoe isn’t as well-suited for heavier runners. Everyone will have their own opinion, but with such a high stack height, it’s hard to say it lacks cushioning: in my opinion, it’s very well-suited for all types of runners.
The 8-mm drop confirms it: it’s perfectly standard and requires no special adjustments.
Energy Return: Surprising Responsiveness (No Plate)
Weighing 7.4 oz (210 g) in size US9 / EU42, the Pure Nitro is very lightweight. While it doesn’t reach the featherweight status of models under 200 g (it has more structural constraints, as it’s designed for training), it ranks among the lightest in its category.
The responsiveness is surprising for a shoe without a carbon plate. The bounce is pronounced and provides excellent propulsion, though it’s not quite as lively as on models with carbon plates, which makes it more accessible.
The rocker is not very pronounced, for a slightly more natural ride, but transitions remain smooth. The energy return allows you to accelerate in any situation, with excellent responsiveness.
Stability: Neutral, with No Unpleasant Surprises
The upper fits snugly around the foot, and the outsole is excellent. Without the stiffness of a plate to counterbalance the plushness of the foam, some testers occasionally found the ride less stable on certain surfaces or in tight turns.
That’s not the case for me: Stability is quite standard, though not a standout feature. It’s worth noting that the shoe is designed for a Neutral stride.
Foothold: A Lightweight, Well-Designed Upper
When a brand wants to make a shoe lighter to improve its performance, it’s often the upper that takes the brunt of the compromises. On the Pure Nitro, the upper is made of a single-layer technical mesh.
There is no lining or reinforcement, that’s where the effort to shave off every gram came into play. Support remains very good, however, thanks to the weave, whose density varies depending on strategic areas.
The result works very well: the foot is very well supported, and the upper isn’t loose at all.
The upper provides minimal but sufficient coverage in cold weather. Thanks to the single-layer mesh, breathability is excellent, and the shoe performs well in any weather.
Overall, the comfort is very good, with padding in key areas, just enough to keep the shoe on your foot for a long time. Its flexibility makes it suitable for everyday wear.
The tongue is thin but well-padded. With its gusseted design, it prevents slipping and moves smoothly with the foot.
The semi-rigid heel counter is flared and extends fairly high up the Achilles tendon. It remains flexible to prevent irritation; I have no complaints in this regard. The padding provides excellent lockdown and good support.
The classic eyelet lacing system, with its flat laces, allows you to try out different tightness levels. The sockliner is also removable.
Overall, the upper is very well made. It’s impressive for a shoe in this price range, and surprising given its weight.
Sizing and Fit
As is often the case, opinions on the fit are divided. With Puma, complaints often center on the forefoot, which is considered rather narrow. Personally, I find the fit to be quite standard.
The soft, relatively stretchy fabric doesn’t constrict your foot, so you can choose your usual size. If you’re unsure, or if you have very wide feet, go up half a size.
Traction: a Generous, High-Grip PUMAGRIP
For the outsole, Puma uses its high-quality PUMAGRIP outsole rubber. As with the upper, the thickness is impressive, this is another area that’s sometimes compromised to reduce weight.
That’s not the case here, though, the generous layer over a wide surface area pleasantly balances out the plushness of the foam. Traction is effective, and grip on wet surfaces is secure, with no slipping to speak of.
The micro-grooves provide excellent flexibility. This road shoe handles most trails with ease, but technical terrain will be more challenging.
Use: The Versatile Model I Recommend
One word sums up the Pure Nitro: versatility. Puma has pulled off the feat of offering a 100% Peba model at a very affordable price, with excellent durability to boot.
With a 38-mm stack height, it offers high cushioning and allows you to run longer distances without restriction. It’s suitable for all runners, from beginners to seasoned runners.
It’s also ideal for beginners: comfortable at slower paces, less stiff than shoes with a plate (or than some competitors without a plate), it allows you to switch paces quickly.
From an easy recovery run to a long run, the Pure Nitro offers excellent ride quality on all moderate-paced runs. And when you need to pick up the pace, it’s right there for you.
The running responsiveness is excellent and covers a wide range of paces during training. Long runs with pace variations are very enjoyable: switching from a marathon pace to a 10-km pace is no problem at all.
For pure speed workouts, however, it’s a little less effective. The plush feel and the lack of a Plate become noticeable at high speeds, although this only affects a small percentage of runners.
For racing, this running shoe remains a good choice for all distances. While it certainly doesn’t perform as well as more expensive models with a plate, such as the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 4, it is much more affordable.
It’s therefore an excellent choice for daily training, offering impressive versatility and a full range of features. The ideal pair for anyone who only wants one.
Quality and Durability: Built to Last
PUMAGRIP outsole rubber is always of very high quality and seems virtually indestructible. The upper, although thin, shows no signs of premature wear (be careful of obstacles like branches, though).
The foam will retain its properties well over time. All of this ensures excellent durability and, therefore, excellent value for money.
The upper is made from at least 30% recycled materials. Please note that the Puma Deviate Pure Nitro is not vegan.
Should You Go for the Puma Deviate Pure Nitro?
The Puma Deviate Pure Nitro makes a strong impression right from its first version. Highly versatile, it offers an enjoyable ride and value for money that’s hard to beat.
There are models out there that offer better performance or more cushioning, but this one remains affordable and will certainly rank among the best options for runners, both men and women, who want to own just one pair.
