La Sportiva Prodigio Pro (2025 Review): The Best Shoe for an Ultra?
While La Sportiva is a leader in the trail running industry, it remains primarily specialized in high-altitude mountaineering boots and climbing shoes.
The brand addressed this issue last year by launching the Prodigio, a significantly more affordable model designed for smoother trails. This model has been a huge success, although there is still room for improvement.
Thatโs what this new Pro version of the Prodigio aims to do. Is this model a good fit for your goals and your riding style? Thatโs what weโll find out in my field test on different surfaces.
Why should you trust me?
Iโm an amateur runner and a shoe enthusiast. With 4,000-5,000 km under my belt each year, I get to try out a wide variety of shoes. In particular, Iโve been able to test products from competing brands, such as the Hoka Tecton X 3 and the Brooks Cascadia 18.
For this review, I used the shoe during standard training sessions ranging from easy runs for recovery to traditional long runs on hilly surfaces. I also used them for more specialized fartlek workouts in wooded areas and on technical terrain.
Our verdict
An excellent, highly versatile trail running shoe designed to handle a wide variety of surfaces.
- Weight: 260 g in size 42
- Supercritical EVA-TPU composite foam
- Height: 34 mm (heel), 28 mm (forefoot)
- Drop: 6 mm
- 4-mm lugs
- Training, racing ยท All distances
The Pro version features several improvements over the original version. The XFLOW SPEED midsole consists of nitrogen-injected EVA foam, complemented by TPU that has also been infused with nitrogen for greater responsiveness.
Shock absorption is as good as ever and should allow trail runners to tackle any distance. The Frixion White outsole features 4-mm lugs (up from 3.5 mm), providing excellent traction.
While it doesn't offer the same level of protection or grip as a Bushido 3, for example, this shoe is more feature-rich than the basic version and is suitable for a wider range of surfaces.
The upper, with its knit lining, offers a classic fit and sufficient protection for an ultra-classic style.
In short, this shoe clearly falls into the category of shoes for fast ultrarunners, offering excellent versatility.
Benefits
- A well-balanced feel at impact for an enjoyable ride
- Excellent grip on a wide variety of surfaces
- Very comfortable and well-fitting upper
- Good responsiveness and excellent versatility
- Perfect for a fast-paced ultra
Disadvantages
- More limited on very technical terrain
- Runs small, according to some testers
- Your feet may get hot in the summer
Adhesion
The Prodigio's outsole hadn't won over demanding trail runners, especially on technical or muddy surfaces. This Pro version addresses that issue with an improved outsole: the longer lugs (4 mm) retain their herringbone pattern for better grip.
Another major change, the switch from the FRIXION RED compound to the FRIXION WHITE compound, which offers significantly better grip, demonstrates the brand's commitment to making this Pro version more comprehensive.
Although it doesn't match the technical sophistication of the Bushido 3, the Prodigio Pro offers excellent traction and good flexibility. It's also worth noting that the shoe doesn't have a rock plate, a detail that's hardly noticeable thanks to its high stack height.
Types of Surfaces
The Sportiva Prodigio Pro trail running shoe offers excellent traction on a wide variety of surfaces. Unlike the brandโs previous models, which werenโt known for their performance on compact surfaces, this shoe ensures a smooth stride on most trails, making it ideal for racking up miles on ultra-fast routes.
The shoe also performs well on loose surfaces. Even on muddy terrain, it offers better traction than the basic version. However, the 4-mm lugs have their limits and can't work miracles.
Very technical terrain, such as mountainous terrain, is also not ideal for this shoe, which lacks protection features.
Cushioning
For the midsole, the brand has switched to a dual-density XFLOW SPEED foam. It features supercritical EVA infused with nitrogen (as in the Prodigio), this time combined with TPU foam for greater responsiveness.
The feel upon impact is very well balanced, a far cry from the stiffness of the Bushido 3. The shoe offers a nearly plush comfort without compromising stability, which provides an enjoyable ride and makes it easier to maintain effort over long distances.
With a 34-mm heel-to-toe drop and 28 mm under the forefoot, the shoe also offers excellent shock absorption. It was designed to help runners comfortably cover long distances, and a large portion of the running community will easily be able to use it for ultra-marathons.
One last thing to keep in mind is the 6-mm drop, which may take some getting used to if you're accustomed to higher drops.
Energy Return
Weighing 260 g, the shoe is clearly lightweight, especially given its size. Its nitrogen-infused foam provides good energy return, demonstrating that the Prodigio Pro was designed with performance in mind.
Although the rocker is moderate, the transitions remain smooth. While it doesn't quite match the performance of carbon plate rockets, the responsiveness is very good and allows for quick acceleration during racing or training.
Foot Support
The upper on the Sportiva Prodigio didn't win everyone over because it was too similar to that of a running shoe (and therefore didn't offer enough protection). For this Pro version, the upper is now made of reinforced mesh, resulting in a design more in line with what the brand usually offers.
The shoe's fit, which I think is excellent, is based on two technologies:
- PowerWire Technology: The upper combines fused TPU strands, a material that offers good flexibility while remaining strong enough to provide adequate protection
- Wrapping System: a sort of โcageโ around the midfoot. Without any uncomfortable compression, it wraps around the foot and prevents it from slipping.
The shoe provides excellent foothold, even during changes of direction, jumps, or changes in slope. With a wider toe box, it fits true to size and is suitable for a wide variety of feet.
However, although it is more accommodating for wide feet than other models from the brand, some testers find it a little small. It is therefore advisable to try it on before buying.
The heel counter is semi-rigid and keeps the heel securely in place. The laces pass through straps attached to the overlays to achieve effective foot lockdown.
The knit lining provides good ankle support. The tongue, which is integrated into the upper, is not a separate piece but forms a continuous extension. There have been no reports of it slipping, and it extends slightly upward to keep debris out.
With the โslipper-likeโ fit of the knit upper, the brand has prioritized comfort to make long-duration activities easier and allow the shoe to be worn for extended periods. The only downside is that the shoe is a little harder to put on.
Protection and Breathability
The mesh provides good protection in cool weather and adequate breathability. Some testers noted that the foot can get hot in the summer (which I didn't notice this winter).
This is no more pronounced than on other models, since the shoe is designed for all types of surface. Outsole rubber reinforcements have been added to the metatarsal area for added safety on tricky sections.
The toe bumper is effective and provides good protection, as do the side reinforcements on the upper part of the shaft, which are better constructed than on the standard version. While not quite as rugged as a Bushido, the Prodigio Pro will offer sufficient protection on most runs, though slightly less so on very rough surfaces.
Usage
The La Sportiva Prodigio Pro fills a gap in the brand's lineup: that of ultra-running shoes for fast-paced surfaces.
That was already the goal of the standard version, and the Pro clearly raises the bar by improving responsiveness, making it easy to pick up the pace when needed.
Even if it doesn't quite reach the level of high-performance shoes like the Hoka Tecton X 3, this shoe offers excellent responsiveness. It's suitable for all types of workouts thanks to its good shock absorption, allowing any runner to comfortably increase their distance.
However, it has some limitations on technical or rugged terrain, offering less protection than models like the Bushido 3. Despite this, it remains more durable than the standard version and can handle a wide variety of surfaces. The 4-mm lugs are also less effective on muddy terrain.
In short, this shoe is best for a wide range of uses thanks to its remarkable versatility. Its optimal performance on very compact surfaces makes it the shoe of choice for fast-paced ultrarunners.
Personally, I really enjoyed running in these trail shoes, which isn't always the case for a road runner like me. The Prodigio offers an excellent running experience at all paces.
Quality and Lifespan
No worries on that front: all the components of the shoe are of very high quality. The upper and outsole are particularly sturdy, ensuring excellent durability and good value for money.
The laces and mesh lining are made from recycled materials, as is the new XFLOWSPEED midsole. In addition, the Prodigio Pro is vegan.
La Sportiva Prodigio vs. Prodigio Pro
The changes in this Pro version are as follows:
- New midsole with TPU, greater responsiveness
- A more spacious toe box for wide feet
- A stronger and more flexible upper shaft
- Better grip with Frixion White outsole rubber
- More protection features to tackle a wider variety of surfaces
- Knitted collar for a better fit and to keep debris out
- 4-mm lugs (compared to 3.5 mm)
Although more expensive, this Pro version is also much more refined. It handles just as well as the standard version, but offers better traction and more protection.
Conclusion
The La Sportiva Prodigio Pro is clearly designed to compete with the best shoes for โfast-paced ultrarunners.โ With remarkable versatility, whether in terms of responsiveness or the types of surfaces it can handle, this shoe proves to be a very well-rounded choice.
Although it is less suited for technical or rugged terrain, it is an excellent option for comfortably increasing your distance, whether during racing or during training.
