Asics Gel Kayano 31 Review: Ultimate Stability? (2024)

Asics Gel Kayano 31 review

Asics is certainly one of the brands with the most iconic running shoe series. The Kayano series is the oldest and is historically known for offering a stable ride for overpronators.

The Kayano 30 was completely overhauled with a new, more modern construction. This latest version continues in the same direction with further upgrades. Does it suit your profile and running goals? Read on to find out in this in-depth review.

Why trust me?

With a marathon PR of 2:38 and a substantial weekly training mileage, I have an extensive rotation and test many shoes to improve my practice.

I ran with the Asics Gel Kayano 31 at various paces for different session types to evaluate its comfort and ride. I’m not an overpronator, but I did my best to assess the shoe’s stability compared to similar models (neutral and stability). Also, I consulted other runners of different levels to validate my conclusions and ensure that my recommendations would be useful to as many runners as possible.

Our Verdict

9.3Overall Score

Impressive stability shoes, very comfortable and supportive for daily runs.

  • Weight: 300 g/10.6 oz (EU size 42/US size 9)
  • Foam: PureGEL, FF BLAST PLUS ECO
  • Stack Height: 40 mm (heel), 30 mm (forefoot)
  • Drop: 10 mm
  • Training, all distances

The Asics Gel Kayano 31 is a high-end running shoe with top-notch technologies resulting from the brand’s latest advances.

The combination of FF Blast Plus Eco and the new PureGel (rear) offers a balanced underfoot feel that is neither too firm nor too soft. Shock absorption is very good, and responsiveness is decent, considering the weight.

The GUIDANCE SYSTEM 4D stabilizes foot movement to prevent overpronation.

The woven mesh upper offers excellent comfort with a snug fit and good breathability. Also, its stretchy nature enables it to adapt to virtually all foot types.

As on the Nimbus 26, the new outsole features HYBRID ASICSGRIP, a new technology combining ASICSGRIP and AHARPLUS, which delivers formidable traction regardless of the surface.

Overall, the Asics Gel Kayano 31 is a highly accomplished shoe. It will be a great option for runners seeking comfort and stability for training.

PROS

  • Excellent stability and support
  • Comfortable upper with excellent fit
  • Grippy outsole
  • Durable, long-lasting shoe
  • Excellent shock absorption

CONS

  • Heavy weight
  • The toe box can be narrow for some runners

Cushioning

Asics Gel Kayano 31 cushioning foam

The midsole features a thick layer of FLYTEFOAM BLAST PLUS ECO foam and the new PUREGEL technology. Located at the rear, it has the same properties as classic GEL but is 65% softer (according to the brand). Heel strikers will especially benefit from this.

The foam is fairly dense, giving a firm but well-balanced feel. Some runners find the result a bit too firm for their taste, but I had no problem with it.

Let’s remember that it’s not easy to please everyone, as the underfoot feel is a personal preference. Also, stability shoes require a minimum density for optimal support, so a soft foam wouldn’t necessarily be consistent.

For a stability model with a softer cushion, check out Saucony Guide 17.

Also, the combination with the outsole (see further below) works very well, and the feel remains pleasant with good flexibility.

The stack dimensions of 40 mm at the heel and 30 mm at the front ensure excellent shock absorption.

Therefore, there are no restrictions in terms of distance or runner’s weight.

Finally, the 10-mm drop (down from 12 mm in earlier models) is standard and won’t require any transition time.

Energy return

Weighing in at 300 g/10.6 oz (US 9), the Asics Gel Kayano 31 is quite heavy, but that’s often the case with such supportive shoes.

Luckily, the midsole foam is responsive and delivers a decent bounce, considering the bulky build.

Without being the shoe’s highlight, the ride is snappy enough, especially as the rocker favors smooth heel-to-toe transitions.

Support and stability

We’re generally wary of shoes labeled by brands as for “overpronators” or “supinators” in the absence of scientific consensus on the effectiveness of such shoes to reduce injury.

On the other hand, we can (almost) objectively assess the shoe’s stability.

Asics Gel Kayano 31 4D Guidance System

The 4D GUIDANCE SYSTEM is based on four points:

  • A wider base
  • A secure fit
  • Lateral grooves
  • A midfoot energy system: 4D guide foam

ASICS’s goal is to deliver a lasting support system to prevent overpronation in a way that’s suitable for most runners.

My forefoot strike made it challenging to feel it working with my movement. However, all the runners I consulted found it highly effective and had complete confidence in the shoe’s ability to correct their overpronating stride.

Foot Lockdown

Asics Gel Kayano 31 engineered mesh upper

The engineered mesh upper features plenty of cushioning for excellent comfort. It’s akin to the Nimbus slipper effect. It also provides excellent protection in cold weather.

On the other hand, some testers found that the foot could get hot in summer. Despite this, I think the breathability is fairly classic and comparable to other models.

Thanks to 4D technology, the fit is very close to the foot. Maybe even a bit too much as some runners with wide complained of the narrow forefoot. On my end, I found the mesh stretchy enough to accommodate my wide feet, and I think it can adapt to a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Nonetheless, it’s better to try for yourself.

Other than that, the Kayano 31 runs true to size.

The heel counter is semi-rigid and padded for more comfort. The gusseted tongue is well executed and follows the foot’s movement. All these elements ensure an excellent foot lockdown.

In addition, the pull tab makes it easy to put the shoe on.

Traction

Asics has used the same outsole as on the Gel Nimbus 26, with a technology based on an ingenious idea: combining the qualities of AHAR+ for road shoes with the rubber featured in the brand’s trail running shoes.

The result is HYBRID ASICSGRIP, a compound of remarkable quality. Traction is excellent, with a powerful grip, even on wet pavement. Also, the firmness pairs well with the softer foam for a balanced ride.

This smooth sensation is reinforced by the longitudinal groove that allows more flexibility.

While the Kayano is not a trail model, you will have no problem running with it on easy off-road trails like dirt paths.

Use

With its max cushion, the Asics Gel Kayano 31 offers optimal shock absorption for everyone on any distance.

The shoe can be used for most types of training, from recovery jogging to long runs.

Unsurprisingly, speed work is not ideal because the weight makes it more challenging to pick up the pace. However, it will still be suitable for many runners who are primarily concerned with performance.

There are many faster and more responsive alternatives available, but the Kayano is a sure bet when it comes to stability and comfort.

Quality and Durability

Most Asics shoes are high-quality, and the Kayano, being at the top-end, is especially sturdy.

The mesh is robust, and the high-density foam should retain its cushioning properties over time. The outsole rubber also seems indestructible (it showed no sign of wear after over 100 km).

All these elements help to justify the high price tag.

In terms of sustainability, the insole dyeing process helps to reduce water consumption by 33% and carbon emissions by 45%. However, it’s a small part of the shoes.

Also, FF BLAST PLUS ECO foam uses 20% of biobased materials.

Last but not least, the Kayano 31 is vegan (like all Asics running shoes).

Asics Gel-Kayano 31 vs 30

The key changes from the previous version are the following:

  • New upper for improved breathability
  • More comfortable
  • Reworked collar and tongue
  • Significantly improved outsole performance
  • Softer feel

You might think the two iterations are very similar. However, the new outsole is such an upgrade that it changes the experience, providing more softness and more pleasant landings.

Conclusion

Asics Gel Kayano 31 on feet

The Asics Gel Kayano 31 confirms its status as one of the best stability shoes on the market with optimal support, comfortable fit and ride, and a premium build to last a very long time.

It’s the ideal daily trainer for overpronators with the marathon in sight.

    • Hi Alejandro, what shoes did they recommend you? The Kayano 31 is a good stability model, but if you’re a supinator, it may actually be counterproductive. Thank you, Kevin
