Very good road running shoe with nylon plate that shines during fast workouts
The third model of the very successful Endorphin collection is a tempo running shoe: the Speed. Complementing the Endorphin Shift (trainer) and Endorphin Pro (versatile with carbon plate), this shoe stands out for its snappy ride at fast paces. Its neon hues and fun design also make it a very appealing shoe. The Speed's midsole is one of the most notable features of this model. Made with PEBA-based PWRRUN PB cushioning, Saucony claims that this material offers an explosive energy return. This high-stack shoe (33 mm under the heel, 25 mm under the forefoot) also features a full-length, S-curved nylon plate, and SpeedRoll geometry to provide a smooth and comfortable transition from heel to toes. Testers unanimously enjoyed the ride, but with one caveat: you have to run fast as the shoe is a bit too harsh at slow paces. The Speed is noticeably much lighter than the Endorphin Shift, giving it a more weightless feel. Runners remarked that the upper of the Speed is particularly excellent, with FORMFIT technology that enhances comfort and breathability. Meanwhile, the outsole contributes to the propulsion of the shoe, engineered with durable rubber that grips terrain and stabilizes the foot. Those who tried the Speed commented on a few drawbacks of the design. The rear and plate of the shoe, though cushioned, proved a bit too firm for some runners. However, this rigidity lessened overtime. Runners also questioned the price point of the Speed, which is $40 less than its Pro counterpart but doesn't offer the same versatility and comfort. The Speed is a great tempo shoe, meaning that it works well for interval or tempo runs, but it is not a daily trainer. Runners searching for running shoes suitable for all workouts will prefer the Pro over the Shift. Overall, the Saucony Endorphin Pro is a very good running shoe with comfortable and responsive cushioning for fast running, even though its firmness may not be to the liking of everyone.

  • Firstly, there is carbon rubber on the outer part of the Saucony Endorphin Speed’s sole. It’s a robust material that should effectively protect the shoe from wear and tear. It’s also designed to provide a safe grip on the road even in rainy weather.

  • The midsole is equipped with the PWRRUN PB cushioning technology. It takes the form of thousands of granules made of PEBA (or Pebax), a low-density, flexible and naturally responsive elastomer. These granules are fused together and surround the sole’s nylon plate. According to the brand, this technology is 20% lighter than traditional TPU materials. It ensures maximum shock dispersion while running for optimal comfort. It also promises to optimal responsiveness to activate a natural bounce while running.
  • Also, there’s a nylon plate embedded in the midsole. Softer than a carbon plate, it has the same objective: to stabilize and energize the ride. Thus, the goal is to achieve a more efficient movement and therefore optimal propulsion to go faster with less efforts.
  • Finally, there is Speedroll: a sole design that aims to make the foam and nylon plate work together efficiently to achieve fast propulsion through a smooth transition from heel to toe.

  • The upper of the Saucony Endorphin Speed features an engineered mesh. It comfortably locks down the foot and increases airflow while running.
  • Also, FORMFIT consists of a system of overlays to wrap the foot more snugly for increased stability. FORMFIT is the successor to ISOFIT and translates into a firmer foot lockdown without sacrificing comfort. In addition, this configuration should also contribute to improve the durability of the shoe by reinforcing the upper.
  • Finally, the external heel counter maintains the foot securely while running.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Is the fit true to size?

This road shoe uses a regular sizing chart. To date, we have not seen any runners’ comments indicating that this model fits large or small. Thus, you can opt for your usual size. Nevertheless, if you have the possibility, it is always better to try your shoes on in the shop to avoid surprises.

Is the Saucony Endorphin Speed suitable for overpronation runners?

This model is a neutral running shoe (universal). Therefore, it is suitable for all athletes independently from their level of pronation and doesn’t feature stability features to correct the movement and avoid excessive pronation or supination. Let’s remember that models for overpronation are no more effective than neutral shoes in reducing the risk of injury. We, therefore, advise you to select your shoes according to their comfort, which is the most important criterion.

Is this road model suitable for heavy runners (85 kg/187 lbs or more)?

To our knowledge, only one scientific study to date has looked at the causal link between stack height, weight, and risk of injury. According to the results of this study, minimalist footwear can increase the risk of injury for runners who weigh more than 71 kilos (157 pounds). With its comfortable stack height, the Endorphin Speed does not fall in this category and should be suitable for everyone.

Can I run a marathon with these shoes?

This Saucony road shoe is very well suited for different distances and workouts, though it excels mainly during speed-focused runs (e.g., tempo, fartlek). As far as marathon running is concerned, it depends primarily on your preferences. If you can comfortably wear them for a few long runs, then they should be a good choice for your race!

Comparisons – Saucony Endorphin Speed vs :

Saucony Endorphin Pro

The Pro offers more comfortable and bouncy cushioning thanks to its slightly thicker sole and carbon plate for propulsion. Also, it’s slightly lighter than the Speed and offers greater versatility. Overall, the testers found the Speed’s cushioning to be much firmer and more suitable for speed sessions. Then there’s still the price, of course: the Speed costs about $180 (launch price), which is $40 less than the Pro.

Saucony Endorphin Shift

The Shift is the daily trainer in the Endorphin trifecta of 2020. So, logically, it is heavier, with a thicker sole, and does not feature a propulsion plate. Therefore, it’s not an alternative to the Endorphin Speed, but rather a complementary model better suited for long runs and slower paces.
